Full Text: I was expecting this book to be along the lines of Charlaine Harris’s paranormal reads, but I was wrong. That’s not a bad thing! While I am a fan of Charlaine Harris’s works, I get a little less than impressed when derivative works that ride on the coattails of a successful story or plot. In this case, Howard Parsons should be applauded for coming up with a fun and heartfelt story that stands on its own merit. In a clamshell….er…nutshell, single mermaid falls in love with single human guy and they have to learn to overcome a variety of things to end up happily ever after. What I really like about this book was that Penelope is a lovable character, even when she was being all cold, bitchy and distant. It was great how the merfolk were culturally different from humans–they weren’t just humans with fishtails instead of legs that happened to live under the sea, or on land. I felt like Mr. Parsons really did his homework in studying mermaid lore and wrote a lovely story that caters to all of us who enjoy fantasy and fairytale, Thanks for the opportunity to review this book!

Full Text: This book ended up being different than I thought it would be, but in a good way. Penelope has trouble fitting in and finding a mate, not easy for a mermaid to fit in. I love how the story didn’t just focus on the supernatural aspect, but in growing relationships, learning to appreciate and accept differences in others and fitting in, in her own special way.

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it. I’m hoping the author writes more books set in this location and make it a series.

I’d like to thank the Author/publisher/Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review

Most enjoyable – credible and philosphical

on June 4, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition
A delightful story of ordinary professionals – except that the young woman is a modern mermaid. When she is in her ‘on-shore’ mode you wouldn’t know she could become her other persona. We have so much to learn about Mer culture – as with any other tribe, nationality, religion, or, dare I suggest, species? This gentle novel has a calm wisdom that is just what I need as I am bombarded with the turmoil of today’s news of migrations, budding dictators and civil war. I look forward to more books from Howard Parsons. This one offers food for thought, comforting escape and hope for human civilisation. It’s also funny, moving and enjoyable.

Better than a classic

on May 28, 2016

This was a new take on mermaids, it has become such a done story choice but I went in with a clear and open mind. I’m glad I did because Howard Parsons did a amazing job putting a new spin on the topic!!!!

The setting for the most part is Colony Island. This beach town is so well done that you are drawn into it, the shops, beach fronts, and Mer who live there come alive. They become like friends, family and neighbors you would want to have. Because it is so well done it leads to the love story and many others to be set here I hope!!!!!

In this Penelope Tench has had enough of everything then everything changes for her in just that one perfect moment! In this case it’s meeting Peter. This is not the classic girl meets boy story but it should be!!!

I cannot wait to see what happens in the world next!!
